OverviewThis is a one day course for Consultant surgeons and post CCT trainees from all surgical specialties. The course examines the non-technical skills which underpin good operative performance using short talks, video simulated scenarios, an audience response voting system and small group discussions. At the end of the course participants will be able to understand the theories and research relating to adverse events in surgery and the important of the non-technical skills in improving performance. They will also be able to use the NOTSS taxonomy to observe, rate and provide feedback on behaviours in the operating room.Learning StyleParticipants are sent reading material prior to attending the course. The course gives participants practical experience of observing and rating non-technical behaviours. The format is centered on small group work and the use of simulated scenarios from the operating theatre and other industries.Aims & ObjectivesTechnical skills are, of themselves, inadequate to ensure optimal outcome following surgery. “The Resuscitation Council (UK) Advanced Life Support (ALS) course was launched 1993. It is a standardised national course teaching evidence-based resuscitation guidelines and skills to healthcare professionals in the United Kingdom. The ALS course has also been adopted by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). Each year, on average, 1,000 courses are held and 20,000 healthcare professionals are trained.Who is this course suitable for?The ALS provider course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include doctors, paramedics and nurses working in acute care areas (e.g. ED, CCU, ICU, HDU, operating theatres, acute medical admissions units) or on resuscitation /medical emergency/ICU outreach teams. All applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for a professional healthcare qualification. Medical students, nurses and other healthcare providers not covered in the groups above should be encouraged to complete the Immediate Life Support (ILS) course. “The European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) course is a collaboration between the European Resuscitation Council and the Resuscitation Council (UK). The EPLS course and was launched in 2003 but was rebranded as EPALS in 2016. The course is intended to provide training for multi-disciplinary Healthcare professionals in the early recognition of the child in respiratory or circulatory failure and the development of the knowledge and core skills required to prevent further deterioration towards respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest. EPALS is approved by the royal colleges of emergency medicine, paediatrics, anaesthesia and the association of paediatric anaesthetists (RCPCH, RCEM, RCA, APA) for training and revalidation for both consultants and junior grades in advanced paediatric resuscitation skills and management.Each year, on average, 125 courses are held and 3,000 Healthcare professionals are trained.
