  • Limitations of Fitzpatrick classification at the darker end of the spectrum
  • Difficulties with diagnosis (hard to see erythema, pallor, cyanosis or petechiae)
  • Conditions more severe or disabling in dark skin
  • (Melasma, Vitiligo, Albinism, Guttate Hypomelanosis, Keloid, Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
  • Normal variants (Melanonychia, oral pigmentation, ‘Mongolian blue spot, Voigt line)
  • Naevus of Ota & Ito
  • Dermatosis Papulose Nigrans
  • Variants of AD
  • Conditions peculiar to dark skin (an odd hotch-potch of unusual conditions)
  • Lupus
  • Scalp conditions (the chronic Folliculocentric Pustulosis of scalp group, Tinea)
  • Caution with treatments (e.g. liquid nitrogen and severe permanent hypopigmentation)
